1994 Camp Staff Memories

This was my first of four summers on paid staff at Maumee. So many grand memories at and away from Maumee with so many of these fine Scouts. Some faces are missing from this photo, but I am proud to have joined this family at the age of 15 (14 if you count my previous year as "Freshman" while a Counselor In Training (aka Staff Helper In Training) I am very happy to still be connected to several and miss those with whom I am not.

Project SOAR

Did you know that one of the very first camporees at Maumee Reservation was in September 1971? The event had approximately 950 Scouts and Scouters participate as a part of Project SOAR (Save our American Resources). You can read about it in these newspaper clippings from the Thursday, September 23, 1971 edition of "The Tribune" and the Sunday, September 26, 1971 edition of "The Bedford Daily Times Mail Sun."

How Maumee Scout Reservation Was Named

A committee of volunteers and other selected Scouters were asked to serve on a committee to choose the name for the new Scout camp. They were tasked with deciding upon a name to be presented to the Council Executive Board on January 17, 1972. Chairing the committee was Howell H. Brooks who also served as the Chairman of the Camp Development Committee.

Boy Scouts Have New Summer Home

Article from the Sunday, August 6, 1972 Daily Times Mail newspaper: Camp Maumee, the White River Council’s new Boy Scout camp southeast of Lake Monroe, was put into operation for the first time this summer and attracted several hundred scouts from throughout south central Indiana. Phil Schrodt was one of the counselors and here he describes what it’s like to be part of opening a new camp in a rustic setting.
