Securing Maumee’s Future

Maumee Scout Reservation Endowment

“The plans that we have developed to expand and upgrade the facilities at Maumee Scout Reservation will help fulfill the promise that we made to our area youth when they first joined Scouting. The promise to provide an exceptional camp featuring quality outdoor adventures and fun and educational experiences!” stated Glen Steenberger, Scout Executive of the Hoosier Trails Council.

Summer camp is often the highlight of a Scout’s year and will greatly impact his/her decision to continue involvement in Scouting for another year. Summers spent at Maumee Scout Reservation (Maumee) offer our area youth opportunities for success, introduction to new activities, leadership skills, and a lifelong desire to learn under the mentorship of active, positive role models. Just a week at Maumee gives a Scout experiences, friendships, and memories that last an entire lifetime.

Parents of today’s Scouts expect a camp to be “park-like” with respect to appearance and facilities. There is much competition today for summer camp attendees and parents are extremely involved in the selection process. Our plan calls for developing and enhancing program features of Maumee that make the camper say “Wow”! Additionally, we will be increasing and improving our housing, dining and operation space, and shower and restroom facilities. Maumee is an Accredited Camp which requires fulfillment of the stringent camping standards as determined by the Boy Scouts of America.

There’s nothing like time at camp to build character, self-confidence and bonds that can last a lifetime. The benefits of the Scouting program transcend the differences between us and bring us closer together. Because of this, the investments we are making bridge gaps of poverty, social differences, religious preferences, and other diversities of the youth we serve. Maumee is a keystone asset of the Hoosier Trails Council that helps young people to learn in a caring environment, provides visions of their futures, develops leadership skills, and helps youth to achieve their full potential in life.

The Hoosier Trails Council has set up an endowment which continually supports the facility maintenance at MSR on an annual basis. This endowment is a critical part of our financial support, and as the market fluctuates, so too does this source of funding. Annually 4-5% of the value of this endowment is invested in the up-keep and maintenance of the camp that we love.

The long-term success generated from this investment in Maumee Scout Reservation will:

  1. Better serve our area youth that benefit from the year-round adventures at Maumee.

  2. Make the usage of Maumee more attractive to Scout groups from other councils, thus generating more revenue that can be used to continually strengthen programming.

  3. Provide quality facilities that make our camping operations more competitive to non-Scouting groups for rental opportunities thus diversifying our revenue generation.

  4. Create Endowment for Maumee that will maintain the investment in perpetuity and free assets that are currently being invested annually from the operations budget to further the Scouting movement.

There are various recognitions available for various level of support. To learn more about how you can have an impact on the future of Maumee programs, please contact glen.steenberger@scouting.org.
